Beech Grove High School’s head basketball coach has been suspended from his coaching and teaching duties after he was arrested on suspicion of dealing drugs and driving while intoxicated.
Sheriff’s deputies pulled over Mike Renfro on I-70 East near New Castle early on Monday morning and booked him into the Henry County Jail.
Renfro struggled to stay in his lane on the road while moving at 45 mph, according to court documents. Renfro had 1.86 grams of suspected cocaine in his possession, according to a probable cause affidavit. Deputies examined Renfro’s car after performing field sobriety tests and found a folded dollar bill with a white powdery substance. Sherrif deputies said the vehicle contained over two grams of cocaine in total.
Renfro led the Beech Grove Hornets boys’ varsity basketball team to its first state championship in school history March.
He is scheduled to appear for an initial hearing on Aug. 30 at Henry Circuit Court.
